HAWKINS, Texas (KLTV) – A new canine rescue in Hawkins is gearing up to open next week to help dogs find their forever homes. Canine Rescue 75765 began when residents grew tired of seeing so many stray dogs roaming the streets.
The former Hawkins animal shelter is getting back into shape, this time functioning as a rescue, to house the stray dogs that are in the area. In July, concerned members of the community gathered about the issue of abandoned dogs. From there, a group of five women, the police department and volunteers are making a difference.
“People come to throw their dogs out because they don’t have them spayed and neutered, and there is no animal control, the rescue groups that are there, they are full,” said Brigette McCarthy. , the secretary and treasurer of their rescue. . She said they were busy renovating the kennels.
“My husband and I went down and we took down the kennels, then we did the preparation of the land, then a business….
Manfred Gilow is the Hawkins Police Chief and said since his stay in the area from November 2018 there have been a lot of stray animals.
“I wanted to offer my pound, with volunteers and throw something,” he said. “It exploded. We had so many volunteers lined up. People love to donate money for something really needed.
They currently have four dogs and will have a capacity of nine when the kennels are full. The police department helps bring in the stray dogs and their resident veterinary technician, Susan Morgan, performs the admissions exams.
“Do any tests that might be necessary. I’ll deworm them, give them their first injections if they don’t have a history, and determine if they need to be spayed or spayed, ”Morgan said.
Morgan was a vet tech in the Plano and Longview areas and missed it.
“I got out of it for a while and did other things and I really miss that direct contact with animals,” she said. “It’s very rewarding. You see an animal go from being a shy and sick animal to a healthy animal full of life and ready to move into a new home.
They hope to be open on Monday. You can learn more about their group, volunteer or donate by visiting their Facebook page.
